Magento corp has indicated that as of June 2020, support for Magento 1 is really coming to an end. High time to switch your shop to Magento 2.

Since the release of Magento 2, it has been up in the air. Until when can I continue to use Magento 1. Meanwhile, support has already been extended once because many were not yet ready to get started with Magento 2. Due to the lack of knowledge in the market, many plug-in developers had still converted their plug-ins. In addition, Magento itself was struggling with many bugs (logical if you are going to convert such a sizable platform) which they have been working on with all their might for the last few years.

Also, read on if you prefer to stay with Magento 1 until July 2029!

The PHP 5 programming language also comes to an end

Magento runs primarily on the PHP programming language. Support for PHP 5.6 (the last one before PHP 7) will end at the end of 2018. It is now clear that only PHP 7.2 will be supported until June 2020. It is therefore logical that Magento will also only support Magento versions that run on PHP 7.

Don't wait to upgrade to Magento 2 (latest)

This combination of factors means that from now on you can't wait to upgrade with any shop. It can be done in steps:

  1. Upgrade to the latest version Magento 1.9.3 and add support of PHP 7 (to this Magento is still releasing a patch);
  2. Upgrade to Magento 2.

Of course, you can also choose to upgrade to Magento 2 right away. Even if you are already on Magento 2, but not yet running the latest version, it is necessary to take action quickly.

Plan your upgrade

Don't wait until you have to. There are simply not enough Magento developers to convert all the shop in a few months. Customers of Vicus will be contacted by us to discuss the planning. If you are not yet a customer of Vicus, please contact us using the form below to discuss the possibilities without any obligation.

Do you still want to continue with Magento 1?

Vicus also has the skills to keep your Magento1 webshop up and running after June 1, 2020, until at least July 2029. Despite the disadvantages, it may be your choice to continue with your existing Magento1 webshop. If you still want to use Magento 1, we don't mind at all. If you later want to switch to Magento 2 or WooCommerce for example, we will help you with that. Please contact us to discuss the possibilities.

Also consider OpenMage as an alternative

OpenMage is a fork of Magento 1, developed after Magento officially stopped supporting Magento 1 in June 2020. OpenMage LTS (Long Term Support) is a community-driven project that aims to extend the life of Magento 1 through updates, patches and support.
