SIDN, the foundation that manages the .nl domains, is going to improve the security of .nl domains against ddos attacks, among other things.
It will use a method of duplicating dns servers and distributing them geographically. This should increase the accessibility and reliability of dns servers. Stichting Internet Domeinnaamregistratie Nederland (SIDN) claims to be the first registry in Europe to use this method to provide additional security for the national top-level domain .nl. To roll out the dns-anycast technology more widely, SIDN has contacted LeaseWeb.

SIDN also intends to roll out the technology more widely in the near future to other Internet-related parties such as telecom, cable and hosting providers. According to the foundation, five other major internet companies have already responded positively to the request to implement the dns-anycast technology locally at their premises. SIDN has also installed a node on the AMS-IX, so that companies that cannot or do not want to implement their own node can also make use of the technology.

For a party to use SIDN's dns-anycast technology, a number of conditions must be met. For example, the network must be fully ipv6-compatible and routing must follow the so-called BCP 38 best practices standard. Active action must also be taken against "open resolvers" within one's own network because they can actually reduce security.
